Gauge & Yarn: what your swatch actually says

A pattern's stitch count is not the garment - the gauge is. Cast on a pattern's 100 stitches for a 50 cm back when it assumed 20 sts/10 cm and you knit at 22, and the piece comes out 45.5 cm: 4.5 cm narrower, 9 per cent off, and not discovered until it is off the needles. Rows are a separate trap: at 22 sts and 30 rows over 10 cm, 60 cm of length is 180 rows, while scaling the length by the stitch gauge gives 132 rows and 44 cm. And yarn is bought by weight but knitted by area, so a weighed swatch is the only thing that turns square centimetres into balls: 8,700 cm2 at 5 g per 100 cm2 is 435 g, which with 10 per cent spare is 10 balls of 50 g and not 9.

Manufacturing & Inventory

Knitters and small knitwear makers who size their own pieces or resize a bought pattern, and pattern writers who would rather ship counts that hold at more than one gauge.

How it works

  1. Count a blocked swatch over 10 cm - stitches and rows - and read your gauge.
  2. List the pieces with the width and length you want them to finish at.
  3. Weigh the blocked swatch and enter the ball size: the yarn estimate becomes arithmetic.
  4. Enter a pattern's gauge to see what its stitch counts come out as on yours, and spread any shaping evenly.

What you gain

  • Converts your knitted swatch into the real stitch and row counts each piece needs, and works out how much yarn to buy by weight so you don't run short halfway through.

Frequently asked questions

What data does this product store about my swatch or project?

All figures you enter are kept only in your browser session unless you save them locally. No gauges, yarns, or sizes are embedded or sent to a server.

Does this product calculate yarn amounts for any yarn brand or type?

No. It only estimates yarn by weight based on the grams per square centimetre of the swatch you weighed. It does not know specific yarn properties or dye lots.

What happens if my target stitch count cannot be reached with my gauge?

The product will clearly state that the target cannot be reached at that many stitches per shaping row and show the leftover count instead of hiding it.
